Roger B Phillips:  Managing Director, Action Resources Limited, your consultant and solutions provider –

Roger is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development and is a former Personnel & Training Director within such Companies as B & Q plc, Toys ‘R’ Us (UK) Ltd. and Clarks International Ltd. (C & J Clark).  He is familiar with business practices in Europe, North America and Australia. He started his personnel management and industrial relations career in BOC International after graduating from Oxford University in philosophy, politics and economics. He holds a Diploma in Personnel Management from Aston University in Birmingham. He has worked at a senior level in the distribution, manufacturing, retailing, building/construction, leisure, not-for-profit and public sectors and is an expert on UK Employment Law, practical HR policies and practices, search and selection and the business of motor-sport.

For seven years Roger was Chief Executive of the publically-funded Somerset Training and Enterprise Council (and Business Link) where he developed a number of unique service delivery concepts, including ‘The Opportunity Shop’, the ‘International Trade Development Centre’ and the ‘Somerset Ambassadors’ Club’.  He played a pivotal role in the establishment of the West of England Development Agency and the Somerset Economic Partnership.  He has held a number of non-executive directorships and has been a former Board Member of SBC (Human Resources) Ltd., Somerset Careers Ltd., and Somerset Chamber of Commerce & Industry Ltd.   He has also been a Member of the Governing Body of Somerset College, Strode College and the Edexcel Foundation and has twice served on the South-West Regional Council of the CBI.  He was a Visiting Fellow at the University of the West of England whilst managing the ‘Sustainable Futures’ Project back in 1999/2001.   He has held voluntary senior branch committee positions in the Chartered Management Institute and the FSB.

Roger has had a lifelong interest in the automotive sector, in motor-racing in general and in developing young race-drivers.  He writes regularly on these subjects and on social, economic and community development issues.  He is an experienced platform speaker, has contributed to numerous conferences and training workshops and has even been a trackside motor-sport commentator.  He is currently ‘F1 Guru’ for BBC Somerset and a columnist for “Racecar Engineering” Magazine.

He formed the small Somerset-based strategic HR, Employment Law and Motor-Sport Consultancy, Action Resources Ltd., in 1999 with his wife, Janet Phillips, who is well known locally in personnel management and education circles and was the author in 2002 of “Competencies in Management – a practitioner’s guide” (published then in the Spiro Business Guide series).
